Creating Polygons and Calculating Area in IGNIS!

With IGNIS, you can draw polygons on the map, apply symbology to designate them as a prescribed burn or fire perimeter, and instantly calculate the area in acres.

If you're using IGNIS Connect, you can seamlessly share this information with your team, making it an essential tool for planning burn units or sizing up incidents.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to create a polygon and demonstrate how the area is automatically calculated upon saving.

Follow these steps to draw a line and convert it into a polygon:

  1. From the home screen, tap the red button on the right-hand side.
  2. On the “Add a Line” screen, select Draw.
  3. Use two fingers to move around or zoom in and out on the map.
  4. Tap the screen with one finger to place the starting point of the line.
  5. Continue tapping to add more points and extend the line.
  6. If you make a mistake, tap the Undo button to remove the last point.
  7. To create a polygon, connect the final point to the starting point.
  8. When the pop-up message asks if you’d like to connect the points, tap Create.
  9. Your polygon is now complete, and the area is automatically calculated in acres!
  10. To rename the polygon, tap the pre-filled name, delete it, and enter a new one.
  11. To change the polygon's symbology, tap the blue pencil icon to the left of the name.
  12. Explore different symbology options, choose the most suitable one, and you’ll be returned to the line editing screen. (Let us know if there are other polygon types you’d like to see here!)
  13. When you’re done, tap Done in the upper right corner.
